A GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, displaying and analyzing the geographic features present on the Earth' surface and the events (non-spatial attributes linked to the geography under study) that taking place on it.

SSC maintains working relationships with leading players in GIS field both in Saudi Arabia and abroad.  These relationships further extend SSC?s, range of services and products to meet a wider variety of technological challenges.  For example, our choice of graphical interface for GIS is the Bentley MicroStation.  MicroStation is an industry standard for creating, editing and managing graphical data in an automated mapping environment.  Specifically in GIS MicroStation provides a technology that supports spatial analysis for use in decision-making, planning and problem solving of locational information.  Bentley?s MicroStation and Engineering Information Management products are essential to successful projects at over 70 percent of the largest U.S. engineering firms and geo-sciences organizations.  Users include large corporations and organizations in a variety of industries including transportation, geographic and utilities, process, building, government, manufacturing, vehicles, and electronics.

SSC has access to mapping data and geographical information from a number of sources.  Chief among these is the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST).   KACST is the acknowledged leader in mapping services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  With access to imaging data from four different satellites and a staff of highly trained GIS experts equipped with cutting edge technology, the KACST GIS department has been mandated by the national government to establish standards for mapping applications and provide the most up-to-date mapping services to the public and private sectors.
